Don't get appendicitis if you're uninsured. My sister *is* insured, thank god, but the person at the hospital put the wrong company into the form (even though she had the card right in front of her?) and screwed up the initial billing. Even though it's all fixed now, she's been getting heart attack inducing bills in the mail for the past two weeks, and the self-pay prices are literally unbelievable. For profit health care = insanity.

I watched the "Be Good Johnny Weir" documentary last night, and it was okay. It contextualized a lot of Weir's 2006 obnoxiousness for me, which was good. I thought they gave Evan Lysacek a bad edit. Anyway, it wasn't exactly riveting, but it put me in the mood for the Olympics! I haven't followed figure skating at all this past season, so all the programs and costumes will be 100% fresh for me, yay. And I'm neutral re: skaters for the first time probably ever. And Sasha Cohen didn't make the team, which means I don't have to suffer through her falling every other jump in her long program! The less second-hand anxiety, the better.

TV is sparse lately. All I had to watch this week was TVD and Chuck. And Psych, but that was boring. Totally wanted to throw up when Victor Newman's fugly mug turned up again on Y&R. He was not missed.

LOL, I'm listening to podcasts while I write this, and Rihanna just startled me out of my typing by saying Drake's "Best I Ever Had" is one of the best hip hop songs of the past decade. I like that song too, but really.

Oh, John Mayer. I have all your albums. I have seen you live. You are one of my most-played artists. But I really, really dislike you. You have a problem, and NOT SPEAKING until you can do so without coming off as either deeply stupid or the Joshua Tree of douchebags would go a long way towards fixing that. And keep your old man hands off of Taylor Swift! *shudder*

On a somewhat-related note, I was interested to read that Nielsen reported 45% of people who regularly play video games are, in fact, women. Food for thought, people who make video games!

Blah blah superheroes

So when I heard they were doing a Green Lantern movie and that Ryan Reynolds would be the star, I thought that kind of sucked, since in my viewing experience, the Green Lantern is black. In all fairness, there were several Green Lanterns. They've gone with the second Green Lantern, Hal Jordan. I'm used to the fourth one, John Stewart, who is the Green Lantern featured on the current Justice League cartoons. I guess that makes it marginally less white-washy, but still. They could have done a movie about Stewart instead of another superhero movie about a white guy. Or they could have cast Hal Jordan with a black actor, especially since the Green Lantern is set in New Orleans. White superhero keeping the largely black population of New Orleans safe and sound? Unfortunate.

And now they've cast Blake Lively as an "aerospace executive" who hires the Green Lantern and also plays his love interest. I really like Blake Lively on Gossip Girl, but there's no way she's going to make a believable aerospace mogul. She's just too damn young. She's 22! IMO, she's also probably too young to play Ryan Reynold's love interest. I know people hate Gwyneth Paltrow, but at least the guys in charge of casting Iron Man had the wherewithal to cast someone of an appropriate age to play opposite Robert Downey Jr. Even though I adore Rachel McAdams, I thought she was badly miscast in the Sherlock Holmes movie. She just looked too young to be a woman capable of outsmarting RDJr's Holmes and holding his attention. Kate Bosworth as Lois Lane didn't help Superman Returns suck less, either.

So IDK, this movie is shaping up to be particularly failtastic for me. Even Blake Lively's role annoys me. As if womens' roles in superhero movies aren't already problematic enough, she's a (totally realistic!) high-powered executive who hires a "cocky testpilot" and ends up falling in love with him. Cringe.

In happier Blake Lively-related comic book news, Gossip Girl is now a Korean manga. I love how Blair wears a crown, Serena sparkles, and Dan needs glasses to convey that he's smart -- and he is smart, only less with the socially awkward and more with the evil genius. Hilariously, it looks like there will be Dan/Blair (sort of), and Nate is practically non-existent. Whoever is writing this obviously prefers the show.

It is freaky dang cold out there. And as this is the ATL, I donut approve of this frigidness. From my first sub-freezing runs:

But I actually enjoyed the change of scenery. And I look quite fetching in my winter running getup, if I do say so myself. Plus I get the chance to break out all of my cute scarves, gloves, and mittens I only get to use once or thrice every year.

Now if it would just SNOW. If it's going to be this cold, I deserve snow.

Happy New Year

Well. I just got left out of New Year plans that were my idea to begin with. But whatever, instead I am doing a massive amount of laundry (I'm seriously wearing my last pair of underwear right now) and -- somewhat related to my resolutions -- trying to decide which road races to run this year. Seeing as how I live in metro-Atlanta, there's basically a 5/8/10K to run somewhere every week, so I only really need to choose which half-marathon I want to do. (I'm not sure I *really* want to run a whole marathon, and I figure running a half-marathon will help me decide. I mean, running 13 miles is fathomable to me at this point. 26 miles? LOL WUT.)

Anyway, most everything in GA runs January-March or late October-December, since it's just too damn hot the rest of the year. I won't be ready for anything this spring, so I guess I have until October to get ready. I don't want to start with a scarily massive race, so that's a no on Peachtree and ING. There's a Zooma Atlanta women's half-marathon in November that sounds cool. It winds through downtown plus the Olympic parks and ends with a party at Atlantic Station that I'll probably be too tired to enjoy. But at least I'd be able to lure my sisters along for moral support, since they love Atlantic Station. And it might be a little less intimidating if it's girls only?

Of course, I don't HAVE to run in Atlanta. The Callaway Gardens and Savannah races are out (they're both in the next two months), but I'm seriously considering the Chickamauga Battlefield Marathon. I'm not into Civil War history, but it was the only GA marathon that ranked (#3!) in the Runner's World reader recommended marathons, and it's supposed to be really scenic. As a bonus, I'm relatively familiar with Chattanooga. If I brought someone along with me, I could probably even make it a weekend trip. I'd be tempted to stay at the Sheraton downtown (it's a nifty historical hotel; the time I stayed there, they happened to be hosting a Sherlock Holmes convention), but it's probably a waste of money.

It's too bad I can only do one of those (they're within six days of each other) because they both sound nice. I'm leaning towards Zooma, since it's less hassle and money. But it seems like kind of a shame not to run such a highly rated race when it's so close and I know my way around and everything.

I guess I have a while to think about it. I might try an off-road 10K in the meantime. And I'm looking forward to seeing all the Resolutioneers hit the road tomorrow! I'd gotten to the point where I basically recognize most of the people who regularly run or walk around me (in the early evening, anyway) so it'll be interesting to see if there are a bunch of new people for the next month or two.

ANYWAY. I know everyone is still enjoying (and kicking back after) Yuletide, but [info]chocolatepot is trying to gauge interest in a public domain fic exchange. For fandoms like The Secret Garden, Little Women, Jane Austen, Sherlock Holmes, Anne of Green Gables, Peter Pan, probably myths and fairytales -- basically anything you can think of that's in the public domain. It sounds like a cool idea to me.

NY Post: The End of Idol?

This shouldn't surprise anyone, least of all me, but when I saw that headline this morning I had an irrational fit of DNW DNW FAIL FAIL FAIL rage. The X-Factor is everything I hate about Idol times five. The judges pick the contestants' songs. The judges mentor contestants and compete against the other judges. Worst of all, the judges pick the bottom 2, which is obviously ridiculous and unnecessary. (We didn't need to vote Matt Giraud off Idol three times last season, just saying.) And I seriously doubt a producer-chosen Bottom 2 will get rid of the Sanjayas and Taylor Hickses any faster. Jedward, anyone? It will just be cannon fodder and contestants like Scott and Syesha (who serve a purpose but aren't meant to win) who get the shaft. DO NOT WANT THE X-FACTOR.

I need to talk about Private Practice, which was relatively momentous for Private Practice. But, I mean. I sort of don't want to. Okay, but I will. )

Ugly Betty )

The Good Wife is so excellent. How does this show have no fandom? There are kick ass ladies! Who are more interested in their jobs than relationships! And the cases aren't boring! And the characterization is great! And there's more moral ambiguity than you can shake a stick at! And a mystery arc! I wish more people watched this with me because it's totally the kind of show I enjoy talking about. But I think it is just me and [info]mardia? The Good Wife! )

I have been having to replace my running stuff left and right. I finally splurged on a pair of Nike sport headphones after my second pair of Philips broke. I was SO pissed when they stopped working altogether; I almost had a total meltdown on the side of road, seriously. I was thisclose to pulling them off my head, throwing them on the ground, and stomping them into little pieces. And my running shoes were literally shot (completely worn to smoothness on the balls of my feet, so I bought new running shoes the other day. I like them except for how much stiffer they are compared to my old ones. They have more support since I apparently overpronate; I actually had holes in the upper under the bone where your big toe starts, yiiiikes. On the bright side, they totally glow in the dark -- the whole shoe is reflective! I hate how dark it gets this time of year, but at least it is fun to look down and see my shoes glowing.

So I just heard Ludacris's new "How Low" song on the radio. It is sooo baaad, omigosh. Not only does he sample the limbo song, he samples it in chipmunk! Is it 2004? No, I do not think it is. Embarrassing. But I am always wrong about this kind of stuff, so I bet it smashes as the first big club hit of the decade.

I've been reading the albums-of-the-decade lists, and the biggest problem I have with most of them is that they're too light on albums and songs from the first half of the decade. I'm also stupefied that Green Day is RS's 'Artist of the Decade,' even though I love them. (My pick? Kanye West. He released three great albums and one interesting, heartbroken one. His impact on his genre was massive, and his influence is undeniable.) Some lists are way too heavy on a couple of indie bands I just do not get at all, like Animal Collective.

As far as the music of 2009 goes, it was a pretty underwhelming year from where I'm standing. I'm particularly ready for all of the ironic music acts that invaded Top 40 radio to hit the road. 3Oh3, LMFAO (or whatever), Cobra Starship, Ke$ha, etc. It was fun for a minute, but I'm way past over it. Tik tok on your 15:00 clock, guys.

P.S. Thank you for my snafuflake cookie, anonymous gift-giver!

Adam Lambert. I still don't get it. Maybe I am just a hater. But I do appreciate that his sexuality makes him an interesting media figure. I also fully appreciate the line he is trying to walk. But he has chosen to walk that line in a way that strikes me as the sarcastic kind of FASCINATING.

I just wanted to go super androgynous glam, kind of campy and outlandish. I love imagery like that... It’s just funny, because the second a guy starts doing things out of the box, people get all freaked out. But women do it all the time, so it’s an interesting double standard.

To some people, me being sexual is really offensive because I’m gay. They’re like, he’s being really gay. And I’m like, actually, no, because there’s no other guys up here. I’m just being sexual. And male sexuality is frightening to America. Female sexuality -- it might not be the best example of it, but it’s all over the place. Overt female sexuality might be degrading. It might not be the most feminist type of sexuality, unless you look at it like the woman’s in control, so she’s got the power. Sexuality is just -- people are so freaked out by it. The double standard is that a woman can get away with it but a man hasn’t been able to yet.

Access Hollywood: But you know [Adam's AMA performance] is going to be edited? You know there are going to be some people around the country who are not going to see that?
Adam Lambert: Well, you know, if it's edited, that's discrimination.
Access Hollywood: Will you be upset?
Adam Lambert: I will, because there is a little bit of discrimination going on in this country. There's a big double standard. Female pop artists have been doing things provocative like that for *years*, and the fact that I'm a male and I'll be edited and discriminated against could be a problem.

Adam: There's a little bit of a double standard going on. I think that female performers over the past twenty or so years in the pop music world have been asserting their sexuality, and I think it's a great thing. And the minute a guy does it in a more alternative way, people freak out.
DJ: When Britney and Madonna kissed, nobody wigged out. They didn't edit it out of the west coast feed.
Adam: That's the double standard. [...] My question is, we're living in a free country, freedom of speech, freedom of expression. It should be an equal opportunity situation. If you're gonna censor me, you need to censor the women too.

Adam: I did something that female performers have been doing for years. No difference. It's just the fact that I'm me, and it's a little different for some people. It's really not that big of a deal.
Ryan: Do you think there's a double standard?
Adam: I do think there's a slight double standard, yeah. I think we've seen female pop performers doing extremely sexual routines for years. And all the sudden a guy does it, and it's crazy.

Adam: In our society, male sexuality is so watered down that I don't really know if I can really name anybody that's uber sexy in the celebrity spotlight that's a guy because I feel like no one's really allowed to express real sexuality.
DJ: Why is that, is that a backlash, is that a sexist backlash? Why is that, because I agree with you.
Adam: I think it's like a weird post-feminist thing or something. I think that women in the entertainment community have been able to be very overt and own their sexuality. I think that's great. But it really hasn't been the case for men, unless you're like, a rapper. I think it's also a generational and racial type thing. I think black men can be very sexual, and I respect that and admire that. I wish it was the same for the white rocker dude.

DISCUSS.

And I do not (just) mean that ironically. Some of what he's said here is obviously clueless, to put it generously. But some of it is interesting, at least insofar as it's always interesting to me when different civil rights interests run up against each other. Plus Adam obviously sees the hierarchy of sexual freedoms/liberation very differently from me.

It's not even close to be the worst thing about the Democratic compromises over abortion and immigration to get their HCR passed, but... selfishly, the most personally annoying thing to me is having stuff like this pop up on my daily blog trawl, about how Stupak is "smart" and will "save the future of the Democratic Party." DNW to read stupid white men posturing about how making it tougher to be a poor woman in the United States is an investment in the Democratic Party's future. Especially not after I have spent months watching the caucus gut the bill and stuff it full of goodies and loopholes for their campaign donors.

OH, PRINCIPLES. How very ~small tent~ of me.

ETA: OH! I meant to talk about this earlier, but I heard last week that one of Georgia's gubernatorial candidates signed some ridiculous letter demanding that President Obama release his birth certificate. Yeah, turns out it was Nathan Deal. My congressman. I would despair, but I do not have any despair about my surroundings (politically speaking, otherwise it's quite nice!) left. I will just be exasperated instead.

It's one thing for the government to say taxpayer $$$ can't be used to pay for abortions. I disagree, but at least I can understand that. It's entirely another thing for Congress to bar private insurance providers from paying for/towards abortions. Some people may not like it, but abortions are legal medical procedures, period. So I'm calling bullshit on this step backwards. Even with a generous assessment of the intentions behind this, it's bullshit the Democratic party had to sell out women -- the majority of their voters, by the freaking way -- to get their weaksauce HCR through the House.

Hopefully the Senate will water that shit down. Since watering stuff down is pretty much all the Senate is good for.
