You can't always get what you want, especially if you're Blair Waldorf.
I'm marathoning LOTR with my sisters right now, and it's kind of crazy how something I used to think was pretty decent now seems like it sucks so hard. Like, seriously, how does Aragorn know half of the shit he knows? He is like a one-man forensics team. He is SO ANNOYING. And so are all the stupid, perfect elves. And most of the baddies are so completely, flatly evil that the central conflict of the movie is waaay underwhelming. For me, the only interesting things are the unlikely heroes (the hobbitses, Gollum, Eowyn, Boromir) and the political discord in Gondor and Rohan.

It seriously burns me that Blair doesn't get into college! I get why she was wait-listed at Yale, but it is RIDICULOUS that she was rejected everywhere except her safety when Serena and Nate got accepted positively everywhere they applied, including Yale. I understand that Blair is one of those characters who basically exists to be denied the things she wants, but it was so UNFAIR. She's top of her class and ten kinds of awesome on paper, whereas Nate is a stoner with bad grades who happens to be a good lacrosse player, and Serena has average grades and no extracurriculars. She even got into Brown when she sucked during her interview! It was really difficult to swallow.

But I really do hope Blair gets her little sister on the show. I love how she puts everything into perspective for Blair, and how sweet Blair is to her.

Having read the first six books, I'm really surprised that Blair lost her virginity so early into the show; it's a huge and hugely entertaining arc in the books. I'm actually kind of sad we'll miss out on all the hijinks, even though I liked how things went down on show. But at the end of the fifth book, there's this great scene where Blair seems to have accepted that she and Nate are just never going to pull it together, and she defeatedly asks Serena to tell her what sex with Nate is like, and it's heartbreaking in the best kind of way. I'm sorry we won't get to see that on the show.

In case it wasn't obvious, Blair is still totally my favorite thing about this series. (There are other characters? What?)

ETA: JKR answers more questions about Harry Poter. Nothing particularly interesting, but she does say that Harry and Hermione are at the ministry while Ron is with George at WWW, so I guess the thing about Harry and Ron being badass aurors together is shot for real. Originally, I was a little disappointed, but I'm quite fond of the idea of George and Ron being close and working together. Maybe Ron did it to lend a hand at first and ended up liking it so much that he stayed forever!

During the time of the LOTR Aragorn was like 70 years old. Meaning he has learnt alot of stuff including badass tracking skills. Infact quite alot of info from the books and such was left out like the Shire wasn't exactly happy and sunshiney after the main war ended. And I can understand what you mean about one sided villains.

I actually have read the books, a zillion years ago, so I know Aragorn is a ranger and a Duni (or however it is spelled). But he is still a ridiculous encyclopedia of information and boundless resourcefulness. I lost count of how many times he would, like, smell something on the air and know EXACTLY who had been there and how many of them there were and where they were going and who they were loyal to, etcetera. He is like the Hermione of LotR.

Faramir has always been my favorite in both the movies and the books, 'cause he's quite ordinary compared to other characters, but he's kind of the embodiment of human decency and morality.

I can't remember if I found Aragorn annoying, per say, but his storyline was definitely less interesting - you don't need to wonder if he'll fulfill his destiny and save the world because duh, he's Aragorn; of course he will :/

Oh, I love Faramir, too. I'd just forgotten because we haven't gotten that far yet. When I read the books as a kid, Faramir/Eowyn was totally my favorite part.

I have reached my Waterloo with the GG books. They are so awful! Except I might go to the library tomorrow and check three more out...:)

Caitie, dearest. You are getting a bit too analytical of the LOTR movies.
While Aragorn might be an annoying know-it-all, he has traveled over the majority of Middle Earth, he's like 84 years old and knows a bit more than the average joe. Also, these little snippets of smart-ass dialogue are plot-driving devices for the movie, since we are taken away from the never-ending pleasures of J.R.R Tolkien describing a tree over the course of four pages.

The perfection of the elves is something that I'm pretty interested in. The Elves of Middle Earth are PURFECT and they know it. And they're proud of it. However, over the course of the films (and books) you discover that they have many flaws that make them and humans seem alike. (You can especially glimpse this when they are all fighting about the one ring)

I do see and understand your qualms with the ONLY black and white bad guys. Sauron is just PURE EVIL and there no story about why or how. I think that LOTR is more about how even the best and purest minds are corrupted by power (and we see this with Frodo and EVEN SamWISE) when it is given to them. Perhaps this is the same with Sauron, but we'll never know. I wish that there was a little more interaction with Sauron besides his GLOWING EYE ON A TOWER OF EVIL...but whatever.

I like Saruman as a bad guy because he USED to be good, but we see that theme of power corrupting good minds. It's also interesting while Saruman may think that Sauron is going to open his arms and share this wonderful power once he gets the one ring back, you know ultimately this will never happen because who would want to share such raw power with anyone? Why would he share his preciousssssss?

Hmmm...maybe I got a bit analytical...whoops.

How funny -- I caught the movies on TV the other day and had the opposite reaction. I was thinking, "Wow, I don't remember it being this good. Here I thought we were just being stupid and fannish because Elijah Wood has pretty eyes and Sean Astin is, well, Sean Astin, but these are really great movies!" Then again, I only watched five whole minutes.

The one thing I will never understand, though, is how Aragon floated down that river for how many freakin' days and never one thought to jump in for a bath. It's completely beyond me.

I totally ♥ Blair.

I bought my little sister eight of the Gossip Girl books (the only ones I could get my hands) on for Christmas - I hope she likes them. I haven't flicked through them yet, but she was addicted to the show when she stayed on campus with me for a night - she stayed up and watched 11 episodes straight :P

After I read this I asked my sister what she thought about LotR after re-watching it and she kinda made a face and said, it was so melodramatic, lol. And she used to be the biggest LotR fan. I think the same thing happened to Titanic after a few years. It was the "most amazing movie evar" and now people laugh at it :\

I don't like that JKR makes characters marry the most random people. Like Draco and someone that's not Pansy, wtf? How come everyone else marries someone not in the books/Hogwarts, but the trio marries their "high school sweethearts". idk, it bothers me.
