The Author Is Undead
Why is Psych suddenly out of nowhere shipping Juliet/Lassiter? I thought it was just my imagination last week, but it was SO blatant in the newest episode. And not just in a partnersy way! He knows what her hair smells like, and he doesn't (as in totally does) think she's hot? That is canonical shipping! I thought this show shipped Shawn/Juliet? Stop confusing me, show!

Also, PBS is airing the new Northanger Abbey tonight! It's fluffier and less eventful than Austen's other books -- it's basically about a young woman whose penchant for imagining that her life is like the gothic romances she loves to read gets her into a bit of trouble -- but it's still interesting to think about. I actually think the JABC movie had the best take on the book. It was Austen's first, so it makes perfect sense that she chose to write about novels -- about what makes a heroine a heroine, about what makes a story good or bad, about whether or not novels are worthwhile. She was working out her issues, her questions, and even her fears -- was writing novels really what she should be doing? See, this is why all that crap about how The Author Is Dead is no fun at all. Context rules! And so does this movie! I totally recommend it.

Aww you still get Psych? Over here they stopped showing it after 3/4 episodes. Bastards.

I LOVE the new Northanger Abbey! It was written by Andrew Davies, who is one of the best Austen adaptors. This was the best of "The Jane Austen Season" (which also included the crappy Persuasion and middling Mansfield Park).

I also recommend the newest Sense and Sensibility adaptation that just finished airing in the UK, penned by -- you guessed it, Andrew Davies.

This comment was very timely. I've had the new S&S sitting on my desktop for several days now, and I'd been trying to convince my sister to watch it with me. (She's a big fan of the Ang Lee version, and was reluctant to watch a different one. I used this comment (about the writer being the same one who wrote NA) to convince her, and we watched the new version last night. We both liked it a lot, so thanks!

I CONCUR. This is why I hated the "literary criticisms" part of my English major.

Have not seen new Northanger Abbey yet; will tape it when it airs again tonight (just got home from weekend away).

edited because I can't grammar tonight.

Okay, what is Psych about? I keep seeing the trailer spots and they're driving me crazy because I can't figure it out. Am I just dense?

You're not dense! The concept is kind of involved. It is about this guy who pretends to be a psychic. The whole sham is the result of a mishap in the pilot episode. Truthfully, his father was a detective and he's been trained to be incredibly observant, and he has an almost photographic memory. So due to unfortunate circumstances, almost everyone on the show (except his dad and his best friend) think that he's a psychic, and he does consulting work for the police department as well as running a sort of psychic/private detective outfit with his friend.

It is a pretty funny show (and very original -- the tone, the flashbacks... there's nothing else like it on television), but not something I watch regularly. Me talking about it really goes to show how much I am missing my regular TV. (Well, actually, I'm not so crazy about the TV this season. I am only watching three shows regularly, gasp!)
