The Truth is More of a Stranger Than Fiction, Which Life Imitates
+ Remember when Jon Stewart had Ishmael Beah, who wrote a memoir about being a boy soldier in Sierra Leone, on The Daily Show? And Beah went on to sell hundreds of thousands of books and become a spokesperson for UNICEF? Well, now allegations have surfaced that he embellished his autobiography, James Frey style. I can't help feeling like I've seen this episode of television before.

+ The final Democratic debate was truly excellent last night, but all the cutaways to celebrities were distracting and unnecessary. When they caught Josh Lyman on camera, for two seconds I actually wondered which candidate he was working for.

+ Look at mailers the Obama campaign is sending out! They are just like the notorious "Harry and Louise" ads that targeted Hillary back in the 90s. (I'm also not a huge fan of his Committed Christian mailers, but at least I understand why he's sending those out. He said himself last night that his healthcare package is 95% similar to Hillary's, and these mailers are unfair and unhelpful.) So, you know, a politician is a politician, and it's not just the Clintons who play games. I would appreciate less sanctimony is all I am saying.

+ The Nation has posted a pretty persuasive case for Obama's nomination, from a liberal perspective.

+ The newest Gallup poll says Obama and Clinton are separated by a mere three points nationally. DailyKos says we might not know who our nominee is until as late as March 4th. This had better be the ONLY close part of this presidential election, you guys.

+ Stolen from [info]stepliana and [info]keenai!

Follow these easy steps!

1. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Special:Random
The first article title on the page is the name of your band.
2. http://www.quotationspage.com/random.php3
The last four words of the very last quote is the title of your album.
3. http://www.flickr.com/explore/interesting/7days/
The third picture, no matter what it is, will be your album cover.
4.Use your graphics program of choice to throw them together, and post the result in your own journal.

Kind of boring compared to some of the ones you guys have made. I must admit to cheating the teensiest little bit on the band name. The first article Wikipedia pulled up for me was an area code, and the second was Black Market Radio, which is actually the name of a real band. So Byway was my third try.

+ Also stolen from [info]keenai! Alas, I'm not listening to anything unique or particularly interesting at the moment.

Note: The links have a download *and* preview option, so you can decide if you want the song before you download it.

"You Are the One" - Shiny Toy Guns I have been obsessed with this song since October. I love synthy rock music, and this is what I wanted (and was DENIED) from the the last Killer's album.

"Kiss, Kiss" - Yeah Yeah Yeahs This song is aggressive and sexy, and I totally love it.

"Combat Baby" - Metric This song is so oooold, but it was in a mix I downloaded a couple months back, and I have rediscovered it. And I can't stop listening to it! It's a cute song about missing an ex, and I love the nineties girl-rock feel.

"Helena" - Nickel Creek I really like songs with interesting narratives, especially when the narrator has an angle. And the narrator of "Helena" is unlikable and unsympathetic, which makes the song even more unusual. The song is sung from the perspective of a man who is prettily trying to convince his mistress that he cares for her and that he'll leave his long-term Significant Other as soon as the time is right. But he doesn't, and as his desperation builds, so does the song. Helena leaves him and ruins his other relationship, and he angrily tries to convince her, himself and the listener that he never cared or needed either of the women in his life anyway. As the song reaches its height, he insists that he'll always be just fine, la la la la di da. It's totally fantastic and really turns the conventions of traditional country and bluegrass love songs on their head, narratively and sonically. And that's what keeps it on my most frequently played list, years after I first heard and loved it.

"Weird Fishes/Arpeggi" - Radiohead I've been listening to In Rainbows almost non-stop since it came out. So I had to pick a song from the album, and iTunes says this is the one that I've listened to the most. But I COMPLETELY ADORE the whole album.

I tag everyone, because obviously I am not listening to anything new right now and could use some free music.

HEE. There is no real life only fandom!

I would totally buy your band's CD.

I seriously took me a moment to be like, Oh wait. It's just Bradley Whitford.

So I know that Edwards was your guy. Because I'm nosy: What are you going to do now that he's pulled out? Obama? Clinton? Abstaining?

I'm thinking I'm going to stay out of the primary, yes.

Understandable. There's not much daylight between them, and most of the claims about who would make the best candidate just seem like a bunch of guesswork slash conventional wisdom.

Anyway. Thanks! (Sorry I am so nosy.)

I watched the debate too but it was the first one I actually paid attention too. Go democrats, in any case. I didn't receive a sample ballot so I'm gonna sit out on the primaries, just gotta get my address changed b4 november!

A lot of my f'list isn't planning to vote! Mostly for reasons of inconvenience or because of registration issues. So I feel you on that. I have to drive my ass an hour away to vote, but I'm fine with that because I have more influence in my old precinct anyway.

You should read it anyway! The allegations aren't particularly serious, IMHO. No one disputes that he was a child soldier -- just the length of his service. And critics had already been questioning the vividness of Beah's memories of the traumatic events that took place when he was so young. It might be embellished, but I think you'd be hard pressed to find an autobiography that isn't.

Is that what "Helena" is about? Huh. I've listened to it several times, but I guess I never paid attention to the words.

I am surprised you have heard it at all! It wasn't one of their singles, and Nickel Creek never get much airtime anyway. They're too country for mainstream and too original for country.

I think I'm stealing your Nickel Creek, I love them. Oh and Shiny Toy Guns, they're good too.

But I completely agree with your comment on In Rainbows I'm playing "House of Cards" right now, though my favourite is "15 steps". "Weird Fishes" comes in second. I don't like (though I don't dislike) a lot of Radiohead's other stuff, though I'm absolutely in love with In Rainbows and A Wolf at the Door and since I think of you as a music person, do you know if they have any other album with that sound?

Also, all this political talk is making me upset that somehow I managed to not register to vote, even though I did! >.>

Radiohead's musical stylings have changed a lot over their career. When you say you like In Rainbows and "A Wolf at the Door," I assume you are saying you like their mellower electronic stuff?

I think you might like OK Computer. That's was my favorite Radiohead album before In Rainbows came out, and I personally think it's the most similar. Here is a zip file of OK Computer and a handful of other mellowish songs I thought you might enjoy. So you can sort of sift through that and keep what you like and delete what you don't. And there's more where that came from; just let me know.

Also, all this political talk is making me upset that somehow I managed to not register to vote, even though I did!

This happened to me. I registered to vote when I got my driver's license, just after I'd turned 18. So I thought I was registered, but I wasn't on any records so I had to sit out the 2004 primary. It was a bummer, so I can relate.

I've noticed that. I have a few of their songs from other albums, but some of them are just like meh. And when I said A Wolf at the Door I actually meant Hail to the Thief off of which "A Wolf at the Door" happens to be my favourite song, and it is quite possibly my favourite song ever at the moment.

<3 so much for the music. And whoa, that's a large zip. I should upload some stuff for my F'list though I'm not sure if you'd like any of the stuff I've accumulated that you don't already have. Then again, you have an awesomely eclectic taste in music.

And it sucks that this happened to you too. :( No fun.

Ooooh. So you like their more alternative electronic stuff. (They started out with more of an acousticy, singer/songwriter sound; they have a lot of fans who miss that sound and a lot of newer fans like yourself that are bored by it. Anyway, I still think you will like OK Computer.

And, hey, I am not one to say no to free music!
