High School Bitches
First of all, my littlest sister very much enjoyed reading all of your nice comments, so thank you for those!

So I got this really weird e-mail today. REALLY WEIRD. To convey why it is so weird, I will have to do a little bit of esplaining. Earlier last month, I took over running the Gossip Girl newsletter. It has been fairly uneventful, but not unfun. Since the show is narrated by a blogger, we have some kitschy tie-ins, like a Spotted! section for celebrity gossip, which this cast seems to generate on a daily basis, and an e-mail address inspired by the show: tips4gossipgirl at gmail dot com.

Anyway, I'm checking my e-mail on my iPod, and I notice I've got one in the Gossip Girl account, which is not that unusual in and of itself. But instead of a link to caps or a fanvid, it seems like a genuine tip for Gossip Girl, if she actually existed. The e-mail has a Sidekick signature, and it's clearly a picture from someone's phone, taken in what is clearly a middle school or high school hallway. Its subject certainly seems unaware she's being photographed. And the accompanying message is something about how the girl in the picture can't be trusted and everything that comes out of her chapped lips is a lie.

I am intrigued by this, you guys. Is there a real Gossip Girl virtually terrorizing the halls of some suburban high school? (Is she the reason tips dot gossip girl was taken, and I got this as a mistake?) Did someone not get that I am the nice, shiny Gossip Girl OF FANDOM? Is someone playing a joke on me? Or does eveybody get this kind of spam, and I just get stuck with all the boring penis enhancer stuff?

Anyway. While we're on the subject of Gossip Girl, I have some quick, drive-by rec/pimps.

The Wake Up Toast by [info]them0rgue is a completely excellent deleted-scenes type of fic about Eric's time at Ostroff and how he managed to get involved with an asshat like Asher. I think I have internalized this as canon, it is so good.

Climb a Ladder Up to the Sun by [info]mardia is a Dan/Blair -- OKAY WAIT because she's been intrigued by the idea of them since their lovely scene in 1x04, and she invented an incredibly convincing and entirely plausible scenario that runs parallel to the show in a really fun kind of way, and it is brilliant. And if you like this one, click on her Dan/Blair tag and read her missing moment fic from 1.15 and the other version she wrote of this same story in Blair's POV, and then rejoice in the fact that she is writing this, like, RIDICULOUSLY ambitious epic, and everything you've read is just a "teaser."

Not Your Girl by [info]sionnain is a beautifully written Blair/Jennyish Jenny fic with an interesting interpretation of Jenny's ambitions and motivations throughout her arc. I especially thought [info]sainfoin_fields might like this one.

Yellow Ribbon by [info]cupiscent is very in-character Chuck/Nate fic that doesn't cut Blair out of the narrative. It's a post-ep for "Hi, Society" that got a little jossed by 1.11, but it's still ridiculously great. (It's also R-rated, so hide the children.)

A Milestone by [info]cherryroad is all about Blair and Nate's first kiss, according to Blair (of course).

Hill of Beans by [info]goddesspharo is a fun Blair/Chuckish fic. You know how sometimes stories are pre-slash? This is kind of pre-het, I guess. I was impressed with the way she tied so many of her scenes into episodes, and there are a bunch of fun little details, especially the fanwank about Kati being Asian and also apparently Jewish. (And if you like this fic, check her tags. She's written tons more.)

Links gleaned from my f'list:
+ You know how sometimes someone writes perfect fic? [info]cesario wrote Dumbledore genfic. It is entirely brilliant, and you must read it!

+ This is exactly how I feel about Paris Hilton. I am idly pleased that she's been sent back to jail.

+ [info]sarkastic made a great post about why you should watch The Wire. And you should, because it's probably the best television I have ever watched. I challenge you to find a more diverse and well-developed ensemble. The comments about The Wire's setting being a character of its own are spot on; FNL knows Texas, but The Wire fucking OWNS Baltimore. The two men who created the show have said: "We are bored with good and evil. We renounce the theme." They did, and it is AMAZING.

+ Isaiah Washington is pissed off that ABC is letting him go after he did everything they asked him to. TV Squad says he's considering suing ABC.

(Hat tip to gunderpants, [info]wisteria, and [info]rez_lo.)

Post of Squeevil
DO YOU KNOW WHAT TODAY IS? DO YOU KNOW? IT IS MOFOING SQUEEVIL DAY. OMG, YAY! PUPPIES! BABIES! JOY! CONFETTI! ETCETERA!

So I know I give fandom a pretty bad rap most of the time because of it's tendency to breed idiocy and be downright creepy. But there are moments when I am convinced of its awesomeness. Like today, when I visited [info]studio60_fic and saw that most everything on the first page was Jordan/Jack. God bless you, fandom.

I especially enjoyed Ducking for Apples by [info]falseeyelashes.

I typed up this whole long rant about What About Brian, but really. What does it matter? It's not like J.J. Abrams sucking is news, and why waste your time? I already wasted enough of mine.

Fic Rec!
So I know I've told a few of you Fred and George fans that there was a fic I thought you ought to read. I know I told [info]19_99 as recently as last week because she told me in the interest meme that she liked George alright but felt that Fred was the master-mind behind the inventions and the mischief.

Well, thanks to [info]romanticalgirl I have found the fic again, and it is every bit as clever as I remember. It's Fred gen and a must read for anyone who likes the twinses.

WOOT!

Veronica Mars renewed in 13-episode pickup!

Okay, yeah, so it's not official. But it's being reported by lots of people, so I'm finally going to EXHALE. And I would have preferred a full-season pickup, but 13 is standard for "on the bubble" shows, so I am totally cool with that. If the ratings go up, which I hope they will, we should be cool. And if they don't... it's been fun.

And I have a post-ep fic rec! Go read (Inner) Conflict Resolution by [info]strongly_worded. It's gen about Dick and Mac after the season finale, and it is totally awesome. Seriously, I was clapping my hands with GLEE over this fic. Best. Dick. Ever.

P.S. If you've seen the S2 finale and share my ragefulness over the Pieta screencap, check this out. HEE. (hattip [info]xfunkydoryx)

P.P.S. If you haven't seen the S2 finale, for goddsakes stay away from TWOP for the next two or three days. Couch Baron put huge major spoilers in his recap summary.

Narnia
From The Guardian: "Narnia represents everything that is most hateful about religion."
The president's brother, Jeb Bush, the governor of Florida, is organising a scheme for every child in his state to read the book.
The hatred burns.

And from [info]sloanesomething: Susan fic. Because Susan totally got the shaft. C.S. Lewis sent her to hell for... being a girl? Ignore the Peter/Susan subtext. Unless you don't want to, of course.

Just out of curiosity, are there plans to make movies out of all seven books, or at least all of the books featuring the children? If so, what the hell is Disney going to do about SPOILER )? No offense to C.S. Lewis, but it's not the happiest of endings. In fact, it totally effing sucks.

Recommendations!
Has anyone on my f'list ever read The Search for Delicious?

It's about a king who orders one of his court scribes to compile a dictionary, and it's going quite well until the scholar reaches the word "delicious." I believe his definition was something like: "Delicious is a thick slab of roast mutton." Naturally, everyone disagrees and opines about what they believe constitutes "delicious." For instance, the queen wants the definition of delicious to be a slice of her notorious fruit cake. In the end, the king decides that there must be a census of his entire kindgom, and whichever food is the most popular will become the definition of "delicious." So the scholar sends his apprentice out into the kingdom to conduct his census and there are many adventures that culminate in a very cute ending.

You should read it if you haven't already. I thought of it today while I was moving because... well, I don't want to spoil the end for anybody but anyone who has read it will know what I mean. :)

I have a couple of post-HBP fic recommendations.

Rebirth by [info]nomadicwriter blew my mind. It's post-war gen. I think that [info]19_99 and maybe [info]gaiadaughter would particularly enjoy this.

Newts and Salamanders by [info]orange_crushed is a Draco genfic from Snape's point of view. You know that if I'm recommending a Draco-centric fic, it's got to be awesome.

Hold Me Close by [info]happiestwhen is Ron/Hermione, but it's not shipper fic. It's a very dark fic about what the war might hold in store for the sidekicks. Very sad but very good. Strong R, I should think. Several character deaths, though none "on screen." You will cry.

All The Words by [info]copperbadge has exquisite Percy characterization. It's sort of Percy/Fleur which sounds a bit strange but it's really, really good. I'm always searching for Percy fic, and this is one of the best I've found. (This one isn't HBP compliant, though.)

Fashionista by [info]copperbadge is Remus and Tonks gen. I always think of this fic as the 'Lupin's New Clothes' story. Implied Sirius/Remus, but it's good anyway. :P

Sweet Tea and Cocoa by [info]copperbadge is Remus/Tonks, post OotP. R-ish.

Cartographer's Craft is a post-HBP series by [info]copperbadge. It follows Harry and Co. as they prepare to search for spoiler ). Canon ships all feature prominently, but it looks to be moving towards a slash pairing for Harry, but I can't give away with who(m) because that would spoil it. It's fantastic so far! The rest of the chapters are up at [info]sam_storyteller.

For Remus and Tonks centric fic, you can't go wrong with [info]fernwithy, whose work I've been steadily plowing through for the past two weeks. I particularly like The Doll Army, which takes place when she's about 6 and the mauraders are about 18. Her epic is Shifts which follows Remus, Tonks and most of the Order through OotP. Amazingly enough, the new canon didn't Joss the story, so she's already started an HBP follow-up called Shades. Since the release, she's written about 5 one-shot expositions on Tonks' and Remus's roles in HBP. Spoilers... )

*whew* Maybe I'll x-post this to [info]good_fics later.

Movies. Professor Grissom.
Do yourself a favor and miss Fantastic Four. It's not horrifically bad or anything, but it's not good. Catch it on HBO or something.

Have you noticed that an unproportional percentage of this summer's big movies are sequels or remakes?

House of Wax. Honeymooners. Batman Begins. War of the Worlds. Star Wars III. Bewitched. Fantastic Four. King Kong. Ice Age II. Herbie: Fully Loaded. Charlie and the Chocolate Factory. Dukes of Hazzard. Are you seeing a trend?

Oh my god. It's CSI, high school style! Sara is the nerd and Grissom is the physics teacher and Catherine is the principal and Greg is the class clown. Hee!

Slightly more coherent thoughts on the Veronica Mars finale.
First of all, I come bearing gifts. Well, pimping gifts is more like it. I Was Hoping It Would Be You by [info]sadiekate. Three possibilities, all of them fabuously written. Enjoy.

Final thoughts on the finale. Ultimate spoilage within. )

[ETA]On the cliffhanger; something Amanda can appreciate. )

I think I've lost interest in House. I fastforwarded through most of tonight's episode. I really sort of dislike Cameron and I can't figure out why she is so white. Not that I'm a sun-tan advocate, but she looks so washed out. Same for Gilmore Girls and OTH. I think TiVo has ruined me for TV. I fastforward through everything now.

My week's off to an okay start, I guess
I have a new S/G icon. Which I sort of love. Honestly, how often does Sara beam like that? Yeah, never. Greg makes Sara happy!

Of interest to [info]boosette: Sara/Greg. Possibly the best Sara/Greg I've caught on FF.N so far. Scratch that-- it's definitely the best. Of course, it comes at a bad time since my GSR tendencies are newly revitalized after last week's marathon. New CSI this week!

And SEVEN new Veronica Mars episodes starting tomorrow! OMG YAY SQUEE x 100!!! I still have no idea who killed Lilly Kane. I'm a failure as a mystery fan, a failure!

I was mending a cup this morning and I accidentally glued my fingers together with Super Duper Glue. They were so bonded that I spent twenty minutes soaking and pulling to prise them apart, and I *still* have the glue on my fingers. My capacity for idiocy continues to amaze.

I'm really browned off that I have to wait another week for the new Shearwater EP. I thought it came out tomorrow for some reason... Anyway, it totally sucks. For some reason, I've been listening to a lot of British music lately, and I've been having to wait for everything to come out; lately Kasabian's debut, Ivy's In the Clear, and now Shearwater. And there were a lot more before, too. It makes me very cross. I don't see why they can't have a universal digital release date.

I can't decide whether or not to buy The Decemberists album. I don't really need any more music right now. Speaking of new music, though... the new Ani Difranco is really good, except it's absolutely unpolitical. *disappointed

You know... I'm so fudged off about Shearwater that I'm totally going to post it after I buy it. Take that, beeotches!

Boston Legal
Boston Legal was depressing tonight.

Anyway, I have a recommendation for [info]almightychrissy that I think she'll find amusing. Or anyone else who watches Boston Legal every now and again.

Manful by LadyJaida. It's a character fic focusing on Brad (if the title didn't give that away already). Vaguely slashy, I guess. But what I love about this fic is how absolutely spot on the voices are. I can see this playing out in my head. It makes me insanely happy when everything clicks in fanfiction, especially since it's about character I didn't find very interesting.

Since Alias decided to suck, I need a new obsession.
And Veronica Mars is right there to help me through the mourning period. I bring you a highly recommended recommendation. Yes. It is very good.

Hollow You Out by [info]sinaddict

A shortish gen-fic that follows the aftermath of An Echolls Family Christmas. Plot-wise, it focuses on Veronica and Duncan's attempt to comfort Logan after his father is hospitalized. But that's not really what it's about; that's just the excuse. It's a tangled depiction of the tangled, awkward relationship between our three protagonists, and through it all Lilly's absence looms, separating and uniting them in spite of eachother. Effortless characterization of Logan, a fantastic Duncan and a solid Veronica gel to make this piece insightful *and* fun for the fangirls. (Like me!)

After she died, people started to revise Lilly like she wasn't a real human being anymore; suddenly people were all, "Lilly was a wonderful young woman full of promise," and "Lilly embodied service and commitment to her community," when the only thing Lilly regularly serviced was Logan.

And if you're not watching Veronica Mars, what's up with that?! The series premiere re-airs this coming Tuesday. Get a clue.

Amanda is my superduper fellow Marty&Rory shipperita. Thus, without further ado, I bring you the first coherent Marty&Rory fiction. Like Romans Do by CircleSky. I think the dialogue is spot on, but it's been a long time since I've ventured into the Gilmore Girls fandom, so proceed with caution.

Also. Turns out that the dude who plays Tristan-Lite is was the fresh-faced (and mouthed) best friend from Young Americans. The one who was browned off after Will made it into the uber-exclusive prep school. The one with the crush on Kate Bosworth who existed to make Scout's life miserable. So basically, he's annoyed me for years. No reason to break the pattern now. The sheer amount of Rory/Logan (they are calling it Rogan, can you imagine?) I had to wade through is... staggering, really. I'm not sure why the fandom is eating it up. I mean, basically, you can take the average Trory and change the names and you have an average Rogan.

But I digress. As far as in the NOW, Logan and Rory is definitely going to happen, but I'm rooting for Mary&Rory in whatever shape or form it shall take. Friendship, obviously. And eventually... hopefully something very very very nice. Something that won't tear down or be ugly like Rory/Dean or Rory/Jess. Hopefully something nice and happy. ASP said that there was no show without Luke. And she meant the conflict and the potential for Java Junkie.

Therefore, perhaps Marty is the new Luke?

Anyway. It doesn't matter. Logan is just the new Dean-slash-Jess. And that's fine with me. Let's get it over with already!

Also, did you know that Alexis Blendel (who plays Rory) is dating Milo V. (who played Jess) in real life? Aww!

For Candice... We Miss You )

Okay. So, basically today was just shopping and cleaning and baking to get ready for the Birthday Party. But I managed to read my issue of Time cover to cover during random intervals. I intended to do a political post as I haven't done one in at least two weeks.

But I just don't /care/. This administration sucks fully. Everyone knows that. Any reasonable person would have to acknowledge that this is true. So why keep writing about it? NOTHING they do can surprise me now. Hearing that Bush has Saddam's pistol bronzed and hanging somewhere in the oval office so he can show it proudly to all of his visitors like he's General Custer with an indian scalp? Doesn't surprise me. Halliburton and Cheney and The Deal? Doesn't surprise me. Listening to the Senate make moral comparisons of America to Saddam? Doesn't surprise me. NOTHING could surprise me. I wash my hands of my government until Nov 2, 2004.

Alias Reccs That Rock
To read these is to love these. I've never stumbled across so much talent in one fandom so effortlessly. It's like everywhere I turn there is some other author's work to explore and appreciate and become addicted to. Unfortunately, I've had more luck in the Sark, Weiss, and even Will areas than in the Vaugn areas. I'm not sure if I'm just completely unable to appreciate the post-handler Agent Yawn or if it's actually a difference in the quality of writing. Syd/Vaughn is more than likely JJ's soulmate pick, so this is probably masochistic. But Syd/Vaugn is so freakin' angsty, even before the Season of Doom and even before we found out that Syd's mom killed his dad and even before Ms. Lauren Reed. Syd/Vaugn is a blackhole and it bores me. It's like Dawson/Joey. Ulitmately unhealthy for all involved.

I hope others besides just citycam16 will find these interesting. I mean, I got into the Alias fandom without ever having seen an entire show; a friend of mine was writing some Sydney/Will. And for all my genuine love has turned to morbid fascination, the sets are definitely worth a rent or two.

Thunderstorm by [info]corngirl_jo NC-17
Joanna set out to create a scenario in which Syd and Sark could have non-canon defying sex. And she absolutely accomplishes it. This is beautifully written. Exquisite prose. The first Sarkney I ever read, and probably a big part of why I love the couple so much.

An Exercise in Control by Rhien Elleth, NC-17
Vaugn killed Irina in front of Sydney. She can't forgive him for that. When her nightmares start to encroach on her job, her partner takes an active interest. Yup, Sark is the name and SD-6 is our game. This is good stuff, people. This is crafted with that once-in-a-blue-moon degree of perfection you almost never find. Do NOT read this unless you want to be forever drawn deeply into this wonderful ship.

Cynara by Rez
Required Reading. "Rez carefully creates a universe where it makes perfect sense to bring a jaded Sydney and a bitter Sark together. But she doesn't take any of the easy roads; there are no obvious answers.  Lovely, lovely work."

Aflame by [info]corngirl_jo
A barely-there Sarkney featuring a jaded Sydney and a Sark who's simply tired of it all. Broken characters, beautiful prose. The End as it ought to have been.

Like Time by [info]corngirl_jo
Aflame's Sark and Sydney meet again, quite by chance, at a little round table in an Italian trattoria. Bliss.

Magenta by [info]eretria R
I live for eretria's updates. Her prose is ethereal and full of light and feeling and emotion and true beauty. Her writing always leaves me feeling faintly exhausted and spent. It's so raw and honest and simply gorgeous. </gush> Magenta is my Sarkney drug of choice. It's a Sarkney from Sark's POV as he performs surveillance on Sydney Bristow back in the SD-6 days. The true fun of the story is the voyeur aspect. Sark is looking in uninvited and we're looking in uninvited and it's delicious.

Stir by [info]eretria
Season 3, after Sydney's return. It's an angrier Sydney than we're used to, and she's thousand times more compelling than that Sydney Bristow.

Treason by [info]eretria R
Sydney and Sark are playing games, but Sydney tries to break the rules. This is no fluff.

Enclosed Places by Luna, NC-17
Set in the SD-6 days, Sark and Sydney are apprehended on a mission. But it's not Sydney they were after. An interesting take on the MI6 angle. Be sure to check out the sequel as well, linked at the bottom.

Home Before Dark by Rez, NC-17
Smut, only better. A steamy interlude between Sark and Sydney. Sequel, too.

Illusions by Rhien Elleth, NC-17
The Illusions series is quite possibly the most popular Sarkney installment in the history of ever. This is old and original and classic stuff. Rhien Elleth is usually a genius anyway and this is on a-whole-nother level of fabulousness. Vaugn is dead. Sydney is broken. Sark is not what he seems.

untitled by Rez
Sydney needs to remember, but she's got so much more she wants to forget. She let's her guard down and Mr. Sark takes the advantage. An angrier Syd than we've see on the show, and a more honest and compelling one at that; Sydney has much to be angry about. If you read no one else in the Sarkney faction, you must read Rez. Her stories brim with the hatred and spite and bitterness but crackle with sexual tension.

I Am Not Without Scars by Oracle
This is so In Character that you can actually see Sark, straddling Sydney with the knife to her neck as clear as if it were one of their regular confrontations on the show. When he drawls, "I am not without scars, Miss Bristow," you can *hear* him say it. It's the perfect Sarkney appetizer for the skeptic. It's dark, it's fun, and it's true to the show. And the writing ins magnificient. "I don't know how it happened without me noticing. His eyes are not glacial, not reserved. Not safe.... I am suddenly reminded that blue flame is the hottest of them all. This close, without sunglasses, without protection, his eyes remind me what the core of a supernova looks like." Thanks to [info]eretria for the initial recc.

untitled by [info]auchic NC-17 darkfic
This is unadulterated dark Sark. I mean, this is the depraved, blue-flame-wielding Sark of Season 3. This is unambiguously evil Sark. And there's some not-too-graphic non-con in the ficlet as well. It's worth the recc, though because it's a valid take on the extremely evil Sark we saw mid-season. "'Who?' he wonders aloud, his voice shaking with anger. Who was the one to break Sydney Bristow before he got the chance?" *shudder*

Belfast by Auburn, R
The first of the famous Cities Arc. Very AU. But in a good way. I disagree with some of the characterizations, but this is still a very solid piece of writing.

Not Friends by Luna, NC-17
Sark and Sydney are not friends. Smut- shameless and sexy, sweaty smut on a car hood. I like to think it's a stab at everyone who's been saying Sarkney is all about angry sex and guns and cars. Yeah? What of it? SD-6 era. Delicious fun.

----

If you're looking for Alias fiction of the Spy Daddy persuasion, I got your back.

By Heart by [info]superswank
A bittersweet moment that Jack and Sydney might have shared shortly after her return from the "dead" in Season Three. A "recovered" Sydney, whose emotional scars are far from healed, learns from someone who knows all to well about how painful letting go can be. "His eyes darkened as his voice deepened, the words coming from a place that was raw from repeated probing and self-examination. 'I'm not sure that letting go is ever possible, especially when dealing with the love of your life.'"

Lockdown by Nanda
Jack's thoughts in solitary.

To Break A Man by [info]lunasky Very dark, you'll smell the blood and gasoline. Bill Vaugn's death from Irina's POV. PG-13 for violent images. Wow is all I can say. *shakes head*

When Stavros Met Sofia by butterflykiki
Sydney/Weiss on a mission. Things get a teensy bit awkward for them. Things get a whole lotta hilarious for us. ROTFLMAO kind of fic. Sweiss is a lot of fun.

I've got some more Will/Syd available and a lot of Gen I should bother with, but it's late. Er... early. Gah.

*sigh* It's Wendy/Peter smut. But it's not really just smut. It's more like an exploration of sexual discovery.

It's tremendously written, but it's still Peter Pan, Wendy, and... sex. It's so wrong! *wails* Yet, strangely good.

Caitlin <-- feeling rather perverted

P.S. I really like the way she tackles Peter's aging. Most interesting.
